The task of the park is to preserve the history of the mining and smelting industry that dominated about three centuries of the Metallifere territory. Some of the remaining sights include the abandoned industrial and mining sites, abandoned caves, medieval architecture and art. There are many trails that lead one along the path of these old mining ruins.
The Technological and Archaeological Park of the Metallifere is one of the first parks established by the Italian Ministry of Environment and Environmental Protection. The park covers an area of seven communities in the north of the province of Grosseto: Follonica, Gavorrano, Massa Marittima, Montieri, Monterotondo Marittimo, Roccastrada and Scarlino.
The aim of the park is the recovery, conservation and enhancement of natural resources and the historical-cultural and technological richness of the Metallifere Hills. During your horse holidays and your cycle holidays you will find a lot of abandoned mining sites and caves.
